A downloadable asset pack

Think to yourself, dear reader: have you ever found yourself playing Link's Awakening (or Oracle of Ages/Seasons) and thought, "Damn this is sick, maybe I should try making a game in this style! Nintendo/Capcom certainly won't anytime soon." If this describes you, then you also find yourself in the same mindset that I did in 2019!

Unfortunately my interpretation of that style, "Legend of Whistling Bay," never came to fruition, much to my eternal regret. However! You can fulfill your dream TODAY with the assets that I made here! Theoretically, you could everything here and add nothing but small extras like menu elements. Theoretically!

Whats Included? Well:

  • Full Tilesets for Towns, Forests, Beachside, etc
  • Dungeon Assets for those weird, top-down diorama zelda dungeons
  • Player Sprites for all necessary actions and reactions you might need! He even plays the guitar, now that's just something else. Probably better than me!
  • NPC Sprites for townsfolk, enemies, and story characters. Dang!
  • Overworld sprites for a Dragon Quest-style World Map! neato ya
  • Miscellaneous Menu, Equipment, and GUI sprites
  • NO AUDIO or CODE. Just graphics here folks, I can't program it for ya.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION:
In case you're wondering about purity and accuracy, have no fear! I already did. All sprites here are organized in an 8px:8px grid layout, in line with original spec, along with 4 colors (including transparency for sprites) per 8 pixels! All colors used are also within the Gameboy Color's original specifications, but much of the palette was based on the Oracle series, so you could probably use this on an actual Gameboy rom and have it function mostly fine! If you're ballsy enough, that is...

Anyway, hit me up if you have any questions about any of the assets! Thanks for checking it out! :)

Any chance of you updating this? I thought when you said there were NPCs included, you meant full sheets of their movement, not just a couple directions of them.

Kinda thought you'd have more for a dungeon too.

Edit: Yeah, not really happy with this, the animations are not set out for easy use in a spritesheet, nor are they clear which exactly are which.

TBH I didn't want to have to edit a bunch of things to prototype basic things for my game, so I guess that's how it goes.

I want to buy this but it's only giving me paypal option. Can you add Credit Card option? I have a visa card I'd like to use.

Looks nice! What enemies are included? Are they 4-directional?

How come you didn't continue with the project? Especially now can do in GB maker?

(+1)

a full scale zelda game is a lot of work lol

(+1)

that is fair lol, you should do a kickstarter for it, i recon alot of people would fund it, especially if you were able to do it for gameboy colour carts and even evercade would be huge

Would you mind telling me what engine did you make that demo in? I'm trying to make a Zelda game like that, but i dont know where to start

(+1)

I used GameMaker, all my own code

Thank you!

Will this work with RPG Maker MZ?

it can work but you’ll need to format the spritesheets and tilesets to fit the format for rpg maker, it’s designed with Tiled in mind

Thank you!

He are you willing to share the source for the engine or post it for purchase like you did for the Metroid engine I'm doing a little project and this could save me some time.

Out of curiousity, how did you animate the slashing effect of the sword?

just kinda eyeballed the gb zelda games lol i use aseprite

(1 edit)

Thats fair. I just started using it,  lol

What exactly is the licensing here?

You can use it however you want when you buy it, credit if you feel like being nice lol

Some better images showing off what you're getting would be nice (could be water marked or otherwise).

can I use this tileset in commercial projects? will credit of course

If you buy it, its 100% yours to use with credit no problemo

bought, it's amazing! I especially love the protagonist. I might change it a bit and use it for my project. gonna be a 2d breath of the wild game :-)

could you update a preview of the sprites in the pack maybe? I’m curious to see what is included.

(+1)

The video previews a lot of the sprites included, but I'd rather not just post the actual spritesheet given how easy it'd be to rip it from there lol

normally creators slap like a watermark or something on it or kinda stretch it so that it cant  really be put back together for thieves, but I totally understand where your coming from.

these tiles look like a perfect capture of the gbc zelda style!
